  • Summary -Stormy was written by Jim Kjelgaard in 1959. Jim Kjelgaard is the author of many books about the relationship of a boy and a dog. In this book, Allan Marley and his dad lived in a small cabin outside of a small town called Beaver Flowage in the wilderness. The cabin is about two miles from the town, and there is not much civilization around where they live. Before the book starts, Allan’s father was in a bitter feud with a group of people. His father gets taken away to prison, and the prison is only about five miles away from the cabin, so Allan can visit him. This leaves Allan to live and to take care of himself by himself out in a cabin in the wilderness.
Allan one day goes to the lake that is behind his cabin to hunt, and he finds a dog. The dog is a black St. Bernard, and its previous owner was a hunter who abused the dog. When Allan found the dog, there was a current blizzard with strong winds and negative twenty degrees. He then decided to name the dog Stormy, after the storm. Allan took Stormy in and treated the dog like it was his own. Eventually, Allan decided to keep Stormy, and to teach him how to be a hunting dog. If Stormy became a hunting dog, it would make Allan’s life easier.
If Stormy became a hunting dog, Allan’s life would become easier for one main reason, for Stormy to help him hunt. For Allan to make money for food and other necessities, he had to hunt animals, and sell the hide for profit. Allan would primarily hunt ducks, and would sell their hide for profit at the market in Beaver Flowage. He would use the money to buy food for himself, and dog food for Stormy. This is how Stormy would make Allan’s life easier by becoming a hunting dog.
Throughout the book, Allan would take Stormy hunting, and they both would become trapped in the harsh weather conditions. Eventually, Allan and Stormy would both work together and help each other to survive the storm. The weather was their only main obstacle to make a living, but everything changes when the people from Allan’s father’s feud try to invade the cabin where Allan lives. The people outside the cabin both try to steal Stormy from Allan, and try to burn down the cabin. When the people arrive at the cabin, Allan sees it out the window. He gets dressed to go outside as the people come closer. Allan and Stormy leave the cabin out the back and go into Beaver Flowage to escape the people. Both of them eventually escape the cabin safely. The book ends when Allan and Stormy arrive at the town, without knowing what happens to the cabin.
This book is primarily about how Allan and Stormy have to help each other to survive each dangerous obstacle. The book also shows how they never gave up until they survived.
